IN CONVERSATION WITH MODA OPERANDI

Behind the runway: Bianca Spender Summer 25

This season we've partnered with Moda Operandi to present a digital Trunkshow celebrating the best of Australian design. Here, Bianca speaks with Moda Operandi to dive beneath the surface in an intimate conversation.

Inspired by the weight and freedom of plunging into water, Bianca reveals how this collection is a journey of release. Of dissolving old stories and emerging anew.

Scroll on to discover the quiet moments that unlock Bianca’s creativity, the innovative techniques that breathe life into this season’s pieces, and the emotional language woven into every silhouette.

WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN SOURCES OF INSPIRATION FOR THIS CURRENT COLLECTION, AS WELL AS FOR THE BRAND AS A WHOLE?

“For this collection, I was inspired by the feeling of plunging into water. Its weight, its pull, and ultimately, the freedom in letting go. It became a metaphor for emotional release, for dissolving old narratives and surfacing anew. Water holds power and surrender in equal measure. I wanted the collection to echo that through sculptural drapes, liquid textures, and transparent layers that feel like light flickering beneath the surface.

More broadly, the Bianca Spender brand is driven by emotion, instinct and form. I’m always exploring the tension between structure and softness, between the masculine and feminine. There’s a constant desire to create garments that move with the body like poetry, that feel both intuitive and elevated.”

WHAT ARE THREE WORDS THAT ENCOMPASS YOUR BRAND?

“Sculpture, liquidity and ease.”

WHERE AND WHEN DO YOU FEEL MOST CREATIVE?

“I feel most creative in moments of stillness. Often early in the morning before the world fully wakes. It’s when my thoughts are fluid and unfiltered, and I can truly listen to instinct. Being near the ocean also stirs something powerful in me; the rhythm of the waves has a way of unlocking ideas and emotions.

Creativity often comes through the body too. Draping fabric directly on the form, letting my hands lead before the mind interferes. It’s a deeply intuitive process, where emotion and movement guide the shape. For me, creativity is less about chasing inspiration and more about creating space to feel.”

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF FROM THE LATEST COLLECTION? WERE THERE ANY SPECIAL TECHNIQUES USED THIS SEASON?

“I’m most proud of how this collection captures a sense of emotional release through the language of design. There’s a raw honesty in the silhouettes. Twisting, draping, and dissolving into fluidity, mirroring the internal journey of letting go. We broke apart traditional tailoring and rebuilt it with a softer, more intuitive hand. That deconstruction process allowed the garments to breathe and move in an unrestrained way.

One of the most special techniques we used this season was the development of fluid looped drapes where the fabric circles back on itself like water finding its path. It’s these three-dimensional, liquid yet sculptural forms that feel particularly alive to me.”

DESCRIBE THE PERSON WHO WEARS YOUR BRAND

“The Bianca Spender woman is discerning, instinctive, and unapologetically herself. She’s drawn to clothing that speaks softly but with intention and pieces that carry both strength and sensitivity. There’s a duality to her: she’s grounded yet curious, refined yet unafraid to unravel.

She dresses with purpose. To express. She values craftsmanship, emotion, and form. She understands that what she wears can be both armour and art. A reflection of her inner world.”
